There are videos on social media introducing these kinds of weddings as traditional weddings in Japan.
The first Shinto ceremony in the current style was held in 1900, when Emperor Taisho was married.
At the time, Japan was rapidly modernizing and westernizing.
This led to a new style of wedding that incorporated the idea of a Christian-style wedding, where you have god witness the ceremony.
This means that this wedding style has only about 120 years of history.
The real ancient Japanese wedding ceremony, which has been done for hundreds of years, was called "Shūgen," a ceremony in which the family gathered at the groom's home to eat a meal and drink saké.
In Japan, the most important aspect of marriage was the union of family with family, rather than the pledge of something to God.
Although the Shinzenshiki we have today hasn’t been carried down since ancient times, I really hope we can continue it until it becomes a traditional culture.

As recent as this ceremony is, it's still older than diamond engagement rings in the West (ca. 1920s) and dressing boys in blue and girls in pink (ca. 1940s). A lot of traditions aren't as old as we think! 😊

My dad said when you get married, think about who will be your kid's uncles. So I like the idea of knowing the two families becoming close and knowing each other!

When I was younger we had a Japanese exchange student stay with us. A couple of years ago she got married and my mom got to go to the shinzenshiki. She said it was a wonderful experience.

Its like how wearing white to a wedding only became a custom in the west with Queen Victoria in 1840. And a lot of the standardizing of wedding traditions is newer.

A short that reminds Americans that we are a Blip in History... a dense blip, but a blip none the less. 120 Years is just a sliver shy of half our existence. Even if you include our pre-country era where Europeans were just discovering the land, it's a measly 400-500 years. Then you remember a lot of countries existed before they had a written language, and the invention of that written language is still older than the discovery of the Americas.

The old style reminds me of wedding receptions tbh, though like me more focused on the food 😂

One of many ways that Japan rapidly westernised during the meiji period.

I mean, the Meji area was almost 150 years ago. Pretty sure that we could call it a tradition by now.

It's a bit like the white wedding dress that's a fairly recent "tradition" if you take into account history. I won't explain here, but it's easy to find about the queen who started the trend back in the years. 😊
