The British Empire actually triumphed after the Napoleonic Wars, with its two main competitors out of the game: Spain and France. And with all of Europe weakened by the Napoleonic wars.

Fun fact: most of their African territory came under their control due to defensive wars. Basically, most of them went Something like this: set up a trading post, Ally with local warlord/kingdom, the ally gets attacked, Britain then defends and subjugated the attacker, who then gets attack by someone else, then the cycle repeats.

Napoleon III: "I will create an empire so great that not even the British would dare to rival me!" 😎
Napoleon III some years later: "Oh, hey, Vicky. I just had a little incovenience with Prussia. Can I stay at your house for a couple of days?"

Unmatched naval superiority with an organized army that can rival other great powers. You might have an average army, but if you can keep them supplied via a powerful navy, you’re golden. That’s how.

Edit: everyone seems to interpret what I said as British military being “lesser” than any army around the 1800’s era…guys, I said AVERAGE army for its time. Not that it’s lesser.
Edit 2: Napoleon’s army was undoubtedly unmatched late 1700’s/early 1800’s. I’ve heard many historians argue that the world had to adjust to match his strategy for army organization.

It also helps that they were spared from the brutality of the Napoleonic wars, leaving them in a similar position as the USA found itself after the world wars.

Unlike many other empires, Britain often ruled with benign neglect.
Why spend time, money, and manpower governing lands when you can get others to do it for you.

It is true that being an island nation kinda made potential invaders think twice before attempting anything, but let's not forget that the British Isles were invaded at least four notable times in ancient history: 1. the Romans (c. 55 BC), 2. the Saxons (c. 5th and 6th centuries AD), 3. the Vikings (8th century AD), and 4. the Normans (1066 AD). Granted, I understand that they are meaning that Britain has been difficult to invade in modern or semi-modern times, but it's still important to remember that Britain has, indeed been invaded many times and that those invasions have shaped modern Britain.

The key was focusing on trade and diplomatic ties initially.
An island with over 2000 year’s experience in war, migration and religious differences by the time it came to colonise.
