Getting Old Wood Ready For Paint. Start by chipping off the old flaking paint with a scraper, there may be multiple layers of paint, so get as close to bare wood as you can.

Next, apply wood putty or bondo to the damaged areas. Press material into the voids as far as you can, then smooth the surface and remove excess product.

Once the putty dries, sand it down with a medium grit sandpaper. Make sure to also sand down the edges of the old paint. Feather the paint edges into the wood, so your new paint will go on smoother without old paint lines.

Sand again with a fine grit sandpaper. I do this last step by hand.

Clean up and start painting.

Damn, you just brought back a 40 year old memory of helping my grandfather paint an old house. Thank you my brother

Slightly damp cloth to dust properly before painting.
Otherwise, you're more likely to leave particles the paint will climb and leave imperfections in the finish.

The best way to remove paint like that and get it down to Bare wood is using a propane torch. Just heat up the paint until it gets soft and then you’re putting knife will peal it off easily and you have nothing bare Wood
