To build MLE, they used Kaggle, the popular ML competition platform, selecting 75 competitions to test AI performance. Their goal? To see if AI agents could score at least bronze medals.
Using AIDE scaffolding - a teaching method that breaks down ML tasks into manageable steps - their o1-preview model managed to secure bronze in 17% of these competitions. Even better, this performance doubled to 34% over multiple attempts.
For context, bronze medals mean you're in the top 30% of all participants. So this shows that o1-preview can actually compete with human data scientists on real-world problems.
