Acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when acid from the stomach regularly flows back into the esophagus. The primary cause of acid reflux disease is a weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus. When the LES doesn't close properly, stomach acid can flow into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort.


Certain lifestyle factors also contribute to acid reflux disease, including eating large meals, eating late at night, lying down after eating, and consuming acidic or fatty foods. Obesity, smoking, and pregnancy can also increase the risk of developing acid reflux disease.


Other conditions that can result in acid reflux disease include hiatal hernias, gastroparesis, and scleroderma. Additionally, some medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can cause acid reflux symptoms.
