Yea, terrain directs them. I shot a very nice deer a few years ago. I was hunting transition very close to staging. A NW wind would not favor the deer. The wind I couldn't get away with was S or SW. The temp dropped 25 degrees in 2 hours so they were going to move. But it wasn't a dangerous thermal situation & with a SE wind they weren't going to be coming out of from the NW with cattails & 3 feet of water. The key is to pick the perfect tree where you give the deer a 75% advantage & all you need is the 25% to get them to come right by you. All driven by terrain. They bed 300 yards from where I spotted them bedding the day b4. There wasnt much of a thermal situation in the area I had a great hunt where it was like September @ noon & hours later I was tracking a deer for 20 yards that I video-taped with a 1/2" of wet snow coming down. ๐ฎ

I snow track bucks in the north Midwest. I've been doing it for many years and probably tracked 500 mature bucks during the rut. I've found that these bucks go where they want to go independent of wind. The only time I notice wind to play a roll is when they get to a doe area they swing down wind to use their nose to scan that area for does. Also they definitely run a set pattern to go from area to area and they use the same path every time. They will take the easiest - safest route. If there is a funnel that gets hunting pressure they will avoid it and take a tougher route to get past it. They will get to a clear cut ( doe area) then shift to the down wind side to scent check for does. Otherwise they really don't use the wind to decide which way to go on any given day.
