More thought pattern you could turn down the reduction an get your gain set then add the comp so you can hear what it’s doing to your original sound but both ways work

Right knob first to compress, left knob second to make up. That's the "hard" part on setting an LA-2A.

I use my LA2A
in front of my guitar rig/s and drive my tube amps front end harder. Sounds way cool as a sort of overdrive/distortion pedal. My guitar rig is always made up of at least three tube amps driving multiples of cabinets. WET/DRY/WET configuration. Just like EVH. Cheers!

You said people think it works like the 1176, but on the 1176 it's also input amplifier and output amplifier. Compression is set by the ratio (technically a threshold control but whatever). But some people think more input means more compression (in a roundabout way distortion from driving the amp circuit is compression - but that's not what they think is happening)

I always thought the gain control was to compensate for the added gain by the compression. As a sort of downstream effect.

They should've switched the order of the controls and problem fixed :) The Slate Digital 2A clone has gain below peak reduction - problem solved :D
