I used to live in Houston. All of the little yards in our subdivision had privacy fences. One day I saw a little cat walking on the top edge of the fences and then onto the roofs of the houses. She was matted and a little thin and appeared to be homeless. She wouldn't let anyone near her. She'd walk on the edge of the streets but never went to a 'home' that I saw. I started putting food out for her and in no time she would come to eat. She did this every day for almost a year. She would get closer and closer but never let me near. Gradually she would eat when I was outside and then when I sat near her bowl. Finally I could sit on the ground near enough to touch her but still no joy. Finally as I sat watching her eat I said, "You know and I know that you're not afraid anymore. When are you coming into my house. You are already in my heart." She looked at me and jumped into my lap. We were best friends for the next 14 years. Ms. Shelby waited by the door for me to come home from work. She ruled our home and all of the cats. I miss her still. She left footprints on my heart.

I spent every night one summer getting a feral cat to trust me..that first time he let me pet him felt like I won the lottery! Best feeling ever! I sat from 3-4am with just my arm out my sliding door while he ate the food I put out, eventually he rubbed on my hand, then he came in the house, then he sat on my lap. He was such a sweet boy!
