Neither of them were. Just two dudes freezing together unfortch. If either were the Thing, they just would have enslormed the other right there and then waited to freeze.
Was this ruthless alien just making conversation to build tension? The SECOND any of the other thing-people were outed, they acted. Once alone with only one other person, no thing is gonna chat or anything. It’s just gonna envelope the squishy next to it.

ANSWER [MAJOR SPOILER DON'T READ IT] :
In the end, the guy drinking from a bottle is the Thing. Because if you pay attention: it's not a bottle of beverage, it's a bottle they used to put gasoline in, so they could put the Thing on fire. The guy drinking gasoline without noticing it's not drinkable is not human: he's the Thing.

Watched an interview with Dean Cundey, the Director of Photography for 'The Thing', and he gave the answer.
Childs, and this is how he said you can figure it out.
Throughout the movie, he was VERY meticulous with lighting on the actors, specifically so that ones who were 'alive' had lights reflecting in their eyes. Fires, lamps, bulbs ect. Yet, everyone that was 'a thing', their eyes were dull, hollow and lightless - dead.
At the end of the movie, you can clearly see the fires reflecting in McCready's eyes while Child's eyes were - lifeless.

"Steven King once wrote that nightmares exist outside of logic and there's little fun to be had in explanations. They're antithetical to the poetry of fear. In a horror story the victim keeps asking why, but there can be no explanation and there shouldn't be one. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest and is what we'll remember in the end." - Alan Wake, a writer.

breath condensation and eye gleam are not definitive indicators of the thing: throughout the movie, we see other human characters without eye gleam, thing characters with the gleam, and thing characters whose breath condenses.
Also the bottle in the last scene is not a molotov, as Macready is about to sip it BEFORE he notices Childs approaching, so it wasn't a deliberate misdirection, what ACTUALLY gives away Childs being the thing (IMHO) , is the fact that the usually paranoid Childs, drinks from the bottle without hesitation, as he is not afraid of getting infected.

John Carpenter is so fucking cool, seriously. One of, I feel, very few modern directors who not only had a vision of how to execute their story, but he wasn't up his own ass about it. He's a very chill, normal guy who made great movies that were often considered 'too something ' for critics. Usually he was just ahead of his time, but after he made The Thing Hollywood gave him a side-eye because the film was just so grim at the end. They also struggled to market Carpenter's movies well, either because they didn't care to or they had no idea how to. Big Trouble in Little China confused the shit out of people.

So the story is the cinematographer made a note that whomever became the Thing wouldn’t have a light reflecting on their eye. So watching the scene again, MacReedy has the light reflecting but Childs does not.
Granted, going by Thing 2011 rules Childs also has his earring so that should say he’s human since the Thing can’t replicate metal. But honestly, it’s best just to enjoy the paranoia.

I love John Carpenter... If only they would let him direct the Dead Space movie he wanted to.😢
