I never have to flush because I have a slow coolant leak on an old car.

As a master mechanic at 45 years, nobody knows his stuff. Thank you for putting it out there so people can save money and not get scammed.

Ive always flushed my coolant , brake and power steering fluid every 5 years. Prevantative maintenance avoids expensive repairs down the road

My old Camry came with a built-in automatic coolant flush procedure. All you had to do was turn the car on and let the slightly blown head gasket do the rest.

Just now discovering your channel. I've got lots of catching up to do. Your videos are awesome- so important that you tell the "why" part instead of just the "what" part of the maintenance. I like that.

Change your coolant before it breaks down and you won't need to flush it.Just drain it thoroughly and replace it with the right coolant. Usually around three to five years depending on the coolant type you have. Once you get all that corrosion there is no flushing that will fix it.

As lube tech for 13 years, the amount of ill maintained coolant systems is insane.

Fun fact about DEXCool used in GM vehicles.
It is good for around 5 to 6 years.
If someone doesn't flush it after that it becomes very aggresive to everything that touchest specially any gasket material and in extreme cases it eats material from water pump or even engine block itseelf.

I typically flush all the fluids in my vehicles on a regular basis. Brake, coolant, oil, transmission....all get changed proactively. Of course, I do it myself, so the cost is minimal.

I seriously never gave a shit about learning about cars, but because of you Faye I'm damn interested as you're straight and to the point / while also giving me information in a VISUAL sense.

Thank you for being literally so cool and so amazing, I absolutely adore you and would spend all day listening to you teaching me how to work on cars.

I don’t really do flushes. Just a few drain and fills. My Corolla lets you drain the block, so I’m getting almost all of the coolant out. I just don’t like to “flush” it, forcing pressure through. If routinely changed, I don’t see a need to flush. Just drain and fill.

Cooling system maintenance is more important than most people realize. I like the concept of using a test strip however I do have some concerns/questions. I think it’s great that it tests for glycol percentage and also acidity however do these test strips work on all types of coolants?. The other thing that concerns me is that these test strips do not test whether or not the other additives in the coolant have depleted. Still this is better than nothing.

As a guy who was the unfortunate victim of acidic antifreeze I thumbs up this video. I’ve worked on cars just about my entire life and my f150 is the first vehicle I’ve had blow a head gasket because the fins were eaten off of the water pump. Weirdest thing I’d ever seen still it took it 216998 miles to happen but it did happen and I never expected it.

As a small semi fleet mechanic testing coolant is a must, we use heavy duty extended life coolant. The strips we use test ph, freeze point, molybdate, and nitrate.

I flushed my '95 Grand Cherokee once and it was needed. It had quite amount of sludge. Engine cooling improved and expecially the heater.

Older coolant will break down turning acidic and with dissimilar metals it will become electrically charged and that charge will dissolve metals into itself causing the corrosion you see on the water pump impeller, block, radiators, freeze plugs ect, changing coolant like brake fluid are commonly overlooked until a failure happens.

You can also test it with a Voltmeter. The acid content creates a millivolt reading.
