I'm speaking as an atheist married to a Christian. My husband couldn't square his personal feelings with what he saw the Catholic Church focusing on. While he adores our local Archbishop who does what he believes Jesus advocates for (caring for the poor, aiding the foreigner among us, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, etc.), too many in the clergy were playing in politics and advocating for one thing and one thing only.
He left the Roman Catholic church and joined the Episcopal communion. I have watched as this small community (the Catholic Church we attended was massive) spends every Saturday providing food and clothing to those who need it. They don't care who you are, just that they can help you. And they make it clear that no one who shows up should be proselytized to. The good works should stand on their own and every person that comes to them is thanked for allowing the volunteers to serve them.
Like I said, I don't believe, but it is truly beautiful to watch and if I were asked what in my mind is a good Christian, it is the people there.
