Why do Bangladeshis use water hyacinths for floating islands?
Did you know that people in Bangladesh can turn water hyacinths into β€œfloating islands” for growing vegetables? In low-lying areas, the monsoon season brings months of flooding that leave farmland submerged, making traditional farming impossible. To adapt, farmers collect large amounts of water hyacinths and other aquatic plants, layer them on top of each other, and compress them into sturdy floating rafts. Thanks to their fibrous structure and natural air pockets, the hyacinths are both lightweight and highly buoyant. On top of these rafts, people spread mud or decomposed plants and then directly sow vegetable seeds.
As the rafts gradually decompose in the water, they continuously release nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, creating a natural organic fertilizer system. This allows crops to grow lush and healthy with little to no need for chemical fertilizers.

This reminds me of what the ancient Aztecs did at Tenochtitlan for farming. They built floating garden beds of reed on the lake surface, and connected them into a vast thriving metropolis of homes, gardens and canals. It was a stroke of low tech-genius which worked in harmony with the natural ebb and flow of the lake. However, instead of continuing that Tradition the Spanish Conquistadors drained the lake and built Mexico city upon it. A tragic prideful mistake that sill affects the people of Mexico City to this day with dangerous unstable foundations and tedious flooding issues all in a famously earthquake prone area.

Amazing! And everything is 100% biodegradable. Not to mention, the floating islands provide new habitats for fish and shrimp. Everyone wins!

I am Bangladeshi and My father is an agriculturist. I saw my father's colleagues inventing innovative ways of hydro farming in Gazipur, (BIRRI). Some methods are really mindblowing. Scientists from all agriculture universities are trying their best. Qudos to farmers and agriculturists of Bangladesh. May Allah give you Barakah.
