The fact these two are on top makes me think it’s an issue with the way they measure safety. My bet is it’s incidents per flight hour, which would benefit carriers with a disproportionate focus on long-haul since most incidents happen on takeoff and landing. These two have tiny (but wealthy) domestic markets that are REALLY far away from most of the world. 10+ hour segments are a core part of their business. Gulf carriers would potentially be in an even better spot, but they’re so new that they don’t yet have as many cumulative flight hours as ANZ and Qantas.

Because they really learned from this one awful incident On the morning of 28 November 1979, Air New Zealand. Flight TE901 left Māngere airport, Auckland, for an 11-hour return sightseeing flight to Antarctica. At 12.49 p.m. NZST, the aircraft crashed into the lower slopes of Mt Erebus killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board.

Should probably measure by flight hours rather than how many years they have been around.
