505 years ago on June 30th, 1520, the Spanish retreated from the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan during La Noche Triste. Although Emperor Moctezuma invited the Spanish in to appease them, they quickly made enemies with many in capital. Even worse, Hernan Cortes faced a rival Spanish expedition that was sent to kill him. With enemies landing elsewhere, Cortes was forced to leave the Capital to deal with them. Leaving command of his forces in Aztec territory to Pedro de Alvarado, a man who swiftly escalated tensions with the natives. So when Cortes returned he found his men under siege in the Capital. With few supplies left, Cortes was forced to retreat, though what became of their retreat was devastation. As they were leaving Aztec warriors stormed the bridges out of the capital. Men on foot and War Canoes from the water brutally attacked the conquistadors and their native allies. And Weighed down by their supplies, weapons, and gold, the men found it near impossible to fight off the attackers and cross the narrow bridges. Eventually the bridges collapsed, plunging over half the Spanish into the water. An estimated 400-800 Spanish and thousands of their native allies had either been killed or captured, leading to their escape infamously being named La Noche Triste The Night of Sorrows.
