I love how no one gets that Tommy probably shouldn’t be idolised or shown as a good example of how to live your life. The whole show is how he loses himself and his loved ones as he gains wealth and political power and nothing helps him with the pain of War and loss.

Answered: He was a Sergeant Major, makes sense for him to have a Webly and possibly even get away with killing a officer for cowardice as long as there are witnesses.

Total guess but I just finished a book about the battle of the Somme and it mentioned a company that held captured German trenches for 3 days for reinforcements and basically the officers being too chickenshit to send it.
I chose to think that was Shelbys company

Tommy mentions another story of when he was in ww1 with his brothers John and Arthur, and other comrades of his company.
He mentioned they were suppose to die in the trenches one day against german forces, but the Germans never came.
After they survived they vowed to eachother that whatever happens to them from now on, good or bad, it will all be just "extra" in life, because they died a long time ago.
I wonder if this is another piece to that story.
