Can't afford therapy but we can afford being complimented.

In America, as an American that grew up in the small town south, fake kindness comes more often from people you KNOW than people you DON'T.

Faking kindness seems so much more exhausting than actually being genuinely kind.

turning your back to someone after faking being nice and saying "they suck" is worse than giving out fake compliments.

Had a girl yell at me across a parking lot that she loved my outfit. I yelled back that I love her dress. It was such a sweet and funny exchange, and it made me happy all day.

As a European, I actually love this about you guys. Being kind to random strangers doesnā€™t cost anything and itā€™s always made me feel incredibly welcomed and comfortable when travelling across the USA. Never lose that ā¤

I am russian, and all my life I was told that americans have a fake smile. I was shocked how opened, nice, supportive americans are. For 16 years in USA I met only 2 rude strangers.

As an American it was mindblowing to see people from outside the US saying how "fake" we were for smiling at strangers. We're not being fake I promise!

Years ago I told a woman I liked her earrings once and she stopped and gave me a hug and said how it had just been ā€œone of those daysā€ and thatā€™s something I will never forget. It was a simple, genuine compliment and it changed her day for the better. It always makes me happy to think back on and is one of the reasons I continue to give compliments still today. Some people appreciate them, some people donā€™t, but some people appreciate them on a whole different level and those are the people I especially hope to compliment even though I never know how theyā€™ll react until I actually give the compliment. Thereā€™s joy in spreading kindness and the possibility of making someoneā€™s day better.

If a stranger gives you complement and goes away, there's no reason in the world to call is fake. They are not showing any need to be fake with you other than that's cultural and probably true.

As a person born and raised in NYC, a city most people assume is filled with unkind strangers, I 100% agree that an overwhelming amount of New Yorkers are super kind and helpful to each other and to complete strangers. We arenā€™t effusive though. So while we wonā€™t hype you up and say a lot of sweet stuff, when we see someone in need of help, we offer it if we can. Iā€™ve seen people help strangers carry strollers up and down subway stairs, have seen people randomly give directions to someone who looks lost, give food to people in the street. The list goes on. Americans, even those in big bustling cities are overwhelmingly raised to be genuinely kind. Maybe not sweet. Maybe a little grumpy. But bottom line kindness is an important part of our culture.

When I first came to the US from China I felt the same way. But in college, I met a group of friends who would compliment me and show me love so frequently that it felt weird. But as I slowly got to know them, I realized they were genuine and I eventually started doing the same. It's very nice to just show love and hospitality to one another, even to strangers.

Literally, I was out to lunch with my family the other day and this older woman at a table came up to my grandmother and just told her point blank ā€œYouā€™re such a beautiful woman!ā€ and then just left. Women complimenting other women is especially very common in the US, which honestly is nice āœØ.

I live in Australia and there was an American girl working behind the counter at a clothes shop who complimented me on my outfit. At first I was taken aback because that doesn't happen much here but then after I processed it I felt so good. I really needed that compliment. I have felt so ugly lately so it was nice to hear someone thought I was really well put together. I wish we had more of that in my country.

Yep. Americans are trained to "be nice" from a young age. Chivalry used to be important too (not sure if it still is). But yeah, Americans value friendliness. And we usually sincerely mean the compliments we give out, otherwise we dont bother complimenting you at all...

Iā€™m American and I give compliments for selfish reasons. When Iā€™m sad, it makes me feel better to give someone else a compliment. My day still sucks but theirs is better.
