In Ireland data centers use 25 to 30% of our supply.
Ireland has more data centers per person than another country in the world.

All those centers and we’re still running out of iCloud storage

Power usage isn't a problem when the grid is clean, decarbonise the grid and provide enough wattage and it doesn't really matter.

Sweden uses 2% of the world's electricity!? Its only 10 million people or 0.13% of the world population

It's not the power you guys should be reporting about. It's about the water. They use a ton of water to cool all those servers, the place is a ton of pipes connected to units, which cool the servers. In AZ they're building them on farmland and using water like a farm would.

I’m surprised Sweden is 2% of the total global energy demand

We can’t stop the increase in energy demand. We can just hope that we can find a way to deliver clean energy fast.

This video didn't really answer the question it is asking in the title.

Some much roof space on those data centres for solar panels that could really help generating clean power...

Vox wouldn't exist without these data centers.

Don't conflate the cost of crypto mining with the cost of other data center uses. Crypto is significantly more energy intensive than nearly anything else.

Data centers aren't the problem. If there is a problem, it is that the demand for computing is increasing. You can't stop the growth of data centers unless you stop the demand for more computing.

And considering the compute footprint that YouTube has, this video is a bit ironic.

Why not use the waste heat for communal hot water? Would mean the energy is being used twice, making things much more efficient.

You won’t be watching youtube without datacenters. Where else you want to store all these 4K nonsense

Correction, that study said AI will be 0.5% of global electricity demand by 2026. Still big though.

And companies will tell consumers not to leave indoor lights on to save electricity

Gotta love everyone whining about how much energy and how it needs to be green. In the netherlands we put in like 40million euros to build windgenerators for people that lived nearby. It could have provided clean energy for 36.000 households. 2 months before finishin the project it got announced that microsoft was able to buy the energy and build a data center on the land. They theb sold the land to themselfs but the luxemburg hq so now they pay 100 per year for one of the largest clean energy instalations in the netherlands while it was suposed to deminish co2 output now its just a useless construction that incresed electricity price

I'm curious how much energy data centers save (if any), given that many businesses can be hosted on one server. Each one of those servers are designed to use as little resources as possible. If no data centers, every one of those businesses would need individual servers to run their business. How much energy would that need?
