💔 On the cross, Jesus cried out: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Many think he was just expressing his agony. But there’s more going on. 👀

Those words are the first line of Psalm 22. Every Jewish listener at the cross would’ve known the rest of the psalm by heart.

And what does Psalm 22 go on to say?
👉 “They pierce my hands and my feet.”
👉 “They divide my clothes among them.”
👉 “All who see me mock me.”

It’s like reading a script of the crucifixion… written a thousand years before Jesus was born.

So when Jesus cried out that first verse, he wasn’t only voicing his pain… he was pointing everyone to the psalm that proves he is the Messiah.

🔥 Even in his darkest moment, Jesus was preaching the good news: this was God’s plan all

I was always taught that God turned his back on Jesus with this text, but I never appreciated how that would break the trinity and the night before he said to the disciples all of you will leave me but the father won’t.

I now see this through the lens of the union of Father Son and Holy Spirit. Just like we are deluded to think God would ever abandon us Jesus stepped into our delusion and cried out what many of us feel when we are broken but isn’t necessarily true.

Reading the New Testament with this Trinitarian foundation is really opening up the Old Testament. It all points to Christ 🙏

I heard a preacher say that when the sin of the world was put on Jesus, he couldn't feel the father anymore. Sin separates us from God. God never turned his back on Jesus

What if he was also writing it? God is outside of time, so he could've "sent back" the description of His experience to David, inspiring him to write the psalm.

I just taught a sermon (like, the 2nd one I've ever done, so not the best sermon ever, lol) on this topic, and focused on looking at Psalm 22. It's really cool because that is a Psalm about no matter how they might feel, God does not forsake His people, and points to Jesus, who is the ultimate proof of that fact.

When you realize the majority of text in the New Testament is quoting the Old Testament. The Word of God, Jesus, sent to preach the Word of God, Torah.

Assuming of course, that these are the actual words of Jesus, and not put into his mouth by the evangelist, as he shapes his highl narrative.

Nah.? The writer of the book. Copied it over. He couldn’t think of anything original, so he plagiarized. The simple answer is more often than the correct answer.
