The Brown-Stigler Incident is one of the most incredible stories from WW2, showcasing humanity amidst the chaos of World War II. On December 20, 1943, Charlie Brown, an American pilot, struggled to keep his B-17 bomber, "Ye Olde Pub," airborne after a devastating bombing mission over Germany. Severely damaged and with many of the crew wounded, the bomber was a sitting target in WWII’s deadly air combat.

Enter Franz Stigler, a Luftwaffe ace in World War II, who intercepted the battered plane. In an act of mercy rarely seen in WWII, Stigler chose not to fire. Instead, he escorted the bomber out of German airspace, saluted the crew, and returned to his base. His decision defied the brutal nature of World War II and risked severe punishment.

Decades later, in 1990, Brown and Stigler reunited, forging an unbreakable bond born out of an extraordinary moment in WW2 history. Their story reflects the profound humanity that can emerge even during the darkest moments of World War II.

In the Hurtgen forest an American unit that fought there erected a monument to a German officer who was killed when he knowingly entered a minefield to try and save a severely wounded American soldier.

War is so uncivilised. I struggle to see how we cant all get along. It is, by the looks of things very necessary.

I thought all the Germans in WWII were brainless, heartless murder-robots. Are you sure this incident really happened? I've seen all the movies.
