I never knew my knowledge in school would be helpfulâno, never.
It wasnât until that fateful day when she had looked at me with those wide, pleading eyes, and trembling fingers that hovered over the keyboard. I didnât even understand right away.
She kept flicking glances to the others, though they lingered on one. Her own boyfriend. It seemed unprecedented. I didnât understand.
I wanted to yell at her: âNo one can hear you if you donât speak! Words. Use your words, for goodness sake!â But I didnât.
Though, the thought still lingered:
Why would she be afraid? Let alone of her own boyfriend?
Something didnât sit right with me. I tried to dismiss it, but my heart kept beating faster. More rapidly. I knew something was wrong. Why was I ignoring it? I chastised myself for it, forcing myself to focus on her strange behavior again.
She was staring at me expectantly now, waiting. My skin was crawling. I wanted to ask: âWhat? What is it?â But I held my tongue. I guess I knew she was trying to be silent on purpose.
Thatâs when I noticed the pattern.
I looked at the keys she was clicking. The hyphen. The period. Multiple times. It was purposeful.
I watched, trying to ignore the way her other hand fidgeted with her clothing. At some point, I mightâve caught a glimpse of something darkerâmottled on her forearm: a bruise, but it was pulled down quickly after.
The pattern went as followed:
First the period. Three times.
Then the hyphen. Three times.
Then the period again. Three times.
Pause.
Then repeat.
Oh, I thought grimly. Oh.
I excused myself from the area, my hand instinctively slipping into my pocket for my phone. Thatâs when I dialed the exact number she was requesting me to call.
SOS.
EDIT: I added a few more details for better emphasis. This handles a serious topic. I hope I was at least able to teach you a small bit of morse code :)

A bystanderâs POV: I was walking down the hall of the embassy to the interrogation room. A man sat at the end of the table as the Government officials and Generals sat opposite.
âWho are you really Mr Qin? Who do you work for and what are you doing here in Australia?â Asked General Scott. Mr Qin did not respond, he clicked his pen repeatedly, angering General Scott.
âI wonât ask again Xiao Ji Qin what is your business in the Commonwealth of Australia?â He screamed but Xiao Ji did nothing, he clicked his pen again, in the exact same pattern, itâs like the morse code my father taught me⌠the first click was the letter âIâ then the next were âD-O-N-Tâ and the rest spelled out âU-N-D-E-R-S-T-A-N-Dâ
âTAKE THAT BLOODY PEN OFF OF HIMâ shouted the General, Xiao Ji clicked his pen a final time, âmerchant navyâ. There was a gunshot.
âBloody spies these daysâ muttered a government official
âI know, all the Chinese spies do that mad pen thing, itâs dead annoyingâ said Colonel James.
The door slammed shut and I continued walking to my office wiping my useless tears
