In Britain we have a different approach. We are working our way down to the Roman road underneath.
The Via Appia Antica, the Roman road heading out south from Rome, is still in use after more than 2,000 years. It carries modern traffic.

I've never seen that in San Diego. Near me they "fix" the road by filling the pothole, surrounded by crumbling asphalt, and within a week or two later more holes appear.
