I wouldn’t really call them inhumane, pretty much only effective in close quarters which is why in both the wars shotguns were essential in infiltrating trenches, bunker, and buildings. Even today in our current military we still use them for close quarters and door breaching.

Amazing to think the entente never thought of shotguns for trench warfare after 3 years of fighting and thought a sword (spade) would be best and American rural folk were like mmm yeah I got the right tool.
