In the case of Rolls-Royce, they realized that they were trying to sell much more expensive luxury vehicles to a crowd that were only shopping for normal cars. So they positioned themselves to be where more affluent buyers were, quite literally - they physically stated bringing their cars to boat and plane shows. This positioned their brand where they needed to be. Though it seems like a logical choice, at the time this was probably the best brand positioning decision they could have made.
