the thing is that these immigrants know the work conditions won't be ideal (building a mega city in the sahara?? ) but they still accept it, not just for the line, most gulf countries have a deficit in national blue collar workers so they allow international ones to come easily, imagine how horrible things have to be in your home country (nepal here or bangladesh/india often) for you to accept this treatment just to get a chance to leave

The 16 hours a day might be logical
They’re in a remote land and all there time is in the working site and I think the 16 hours referring to the time of day where they won’t be sleeping and might been ordered to go the building site for some works depending on sudden changes apart from their daily working routine which obviously isn’t 16 hours since they don’t have flagellants
Kinda like security guards, armies, farmers or whatever jobs out there , some days they have to work for long shifts, some days not so much and both their working and free times ( in particular cases ) are in the working places and might needed or ordered to do some extra or sudden works
I would believe the workers had days where they worked 16 hours straight but that would be for short period due to some sudden tasks or late works , like me in my damn college where I have lectures on Sunday from 8 Am to 6 Pm with only one break from 12 to 2 , and the rest of the week is only one lecture a day
