One of the favorite Greek gods is Dionysus, the patron of fertility. Festivals in his honor called Dionysia. The City Dionysia was an urban festival featuring tragedies, comedies, phallic processions, and masquerades. Participants organized parades with treats and dressed in goat skins. From this tradition, the word "tragedy" emerged ("tragos" means "goat", "ode" means "song"). The word "comedy" derived from "komos", meaning "procession of revelers". The festivities concluded with a lavish feast funded by the state. There was also the Rural Dionysia celebrating the end of grape harvest and the pouring of new wine.

Homer called Dionysus "the joy of mankind" and his constant companions were the goddesses Charis and Eirene — Charm and Peace.

Numerous myths were composed about Dionysus. For example, once a bull fatally gored a satyr, a great friend of Dionysus. He poured fragrant floral nectar on his wounds, and then the satyr transformed into a grapevine, and the juice of its fruits became intoxicating. Later, Dionysus visited many countries and taught the peoples to cultivate grapes, make wine, and enjoy this noble drink.
