Hard pack soil like that is fairly stable.

It's always wise to advise people their situation is probably not the same as yours. Every situation is different. People should always do their own "homework.". Good job, Jim.
Happy Independence Day πŸŽ‰

In the caliche soils you have there, Jim, If the trench was to remain open for more than a month or two until you get the tubes constructed. If the length of time goes muich past that, or the rains get too heavy and wet the soil in the sides too much, then reinforcements would be desired. Take care, Much Love and Happy 4th!πŸŽ†

As someone who has repaired a massive water line in a crumbly, sketchy, wet trench wearing a harness attached to a backhoe, I was immediately concerned. But it’s such a perfect consistency. It looks like you could tunnel in it.

We had calich soil in Cochise County. Very hard below the top soil. Perhaps you have the same. May all go well.

Keyboard safety nazis are the worst. Nothing would ever get done if you followed every regulation and rule.

Freedom is being able to do as you please . Be free . Stay free . Let the worrywarts get a job with OSHA or the EPA . Maybe , that's a bad idea . We already have too many seat belt and helmet laws . I know your subscribers truly do love you guys .

High clay content, makes the walls very stable. But wearing the harness, with a sturdy rope, is one safety measure, never more than one in the trench at a time. Never work alone. I was cleaning up wide trenches for motel footers, in Florida. Florida dirt, is mostly sand. I was fortunate, a couple other workers were not. Things like moisture ,and any vibrations, earthquakes, heavy equipment, strong gusts, animals playing around, can all bury a person.
