I was a suck up before, and I regret it! But not in the way the husband is, but rather when I tried to be a gentleman to women and nearly always said yes to everything they asked me to do for them, even without them being my girlfriend. This happened with women I worked with in my retail job or years ago with classmates back in high school. It was awful! I got nothing out of it! This stems from growing up without a father figure as mine walked away from me, my mom and siblings. I had to make a change by learning how to be more assertive and putting myself first. Even today at nearly 30, I'm still trying to improve daily. I look at other men who suck up and shake my head at them. If I tell them that kissing up to women won't end well for them, they become dismissive or defensive, even standing up for the women they suck up to. We really need to go back to our roots as men.
