Installing Teeth on a Skid Steer Bucket

We just ran into shale, rock hard shale trying to dig this basement.
So, what do we do? Well, to start with I had bolted teeth onto the bucket I’m using.
I always use the loader arm safety lock when I’m working on a machine with the arms up, and I test the bucket to make sure it’s attached properly.
The first thing I did was remove this cutting edge- it’s held on by 9 bolts.
These bolts are 10 mm Allen head with a 24 mm nut on top.
These were on crazy tight- it’s almost like CAT didn’t want them coming loose.
Once I got them started with my breaker bar, I used my ¼” impact to back them the rest of the way out.
This cutting edge is way heavier than it looks, so I careful taking it down.
Next, I bolted on the teeth- I used the bolt from the cutting edge on the top and bought new longer bolts for the bottom.
The bucket comes predrilled with holes for the teeth.
I’m not sure what kind of steel they use on these teeth, but it must be some tough stuff.
I got about 900 hours out of the set on my 259B3 before I had to replace them.
Now I can already hear everyone in the comments- you need to get a cordless ½” impact, and I do want one.
Let me know what brand you think I should get.
I love that CAT puts this side cutter on the outside edge of the bucket.
Having teeth concentrates all the power and weight of the machine into small points verses a cutting edge the entire width of the bucket- it’s amazing the difference it makes.
We just started digging out the basement on our new house, and we’re planning to show every step. Be sure to like and subscribe so you don’t miss a thing. ‪@hausplans‬

Beware that Radon is often found percolating through Shale! Use double layers of heavy visqueen under the concrete slab. You may need to install a radon mitigation system!

There is a safety guy giving you the safety nod of approval after seeing you engage the loader lock. 🔐 being safe is always cool

When my grandfather had the exact same problem (Turners Falls, MA, just off of the river) in roughly 1940 he drilled some holes by hand and put dynamite in the hole and dug his foundation that way. : p

CAT’s ground engagement tools set them apart from the competition. They’re incredible pieces of engineering.

This video felt nostalgic, my dad had a caterpillar 416c when I was in 6th grade and I would help him change parts and maintenance in the evenings and weekends, I even learned to drive on it

My steel crew has recently switched to Hercules from Harbor Freight. Yes, I said it Harbor Freight. We use 3/4 inch A325 structural bolts for standing metal structures. If we are not careful the 1/2 inch Hight Torque from HF will snap them in two every time.

That is some soft shale to be dug out with a skid steer. When you do starting hitting more solid shale, remove the teeth from one side or if it's an excavator, only leave 1 tooth on. It concentrates more weight for when you're actually making those wrag-ripping sounds.

For a half inch impact I recommend the Hercules 1/2 ultra torque impact. It's very strong and durable and if you break it you can just walk into a harbor freight and get handled a new one with the 5 year warranty. Easiest warranty. I'm a pro mechanic and I use it for lug nuts and stuff daily and it is awesome

I LOVE my Makita 1/2” impact, but I’m sure the Dewalt is good as well…thanks for the great videos. I always enjoy and learn from them.

Milwaukee high torque 1/2”. Bought mine a couple years ago and use it every day. It’s the go to when none of the air impacts in the shop will do the job also
