My mom and I had no problems with being vegan in a meat eating family. We made mashed potatoes using plain rice dream. After every one ate they were told what the potatoes had been made of. Listen, no one got mad. Every one of them said they couldn’t tell the difference. So every holiday meal that we shared was made with things being made a vegan version. Including the dressing, the green bean casserole. Our traditional stuff. My mom didn’t care about having a vegan turkey substitute but I usually had tofurky. We became vegan in 1990. If the rest of the family had a turkey, they used their own stuffing. We also had vegan gravy. Then my daughter in law hosted a dinner. She kindly made the mashed potatoes except she used soy milk. No one complained. They were great they said. “I” could taste the soy milk. The great part was she went out of her way to make vegan. I have 2 daughters in law who do that. And a daughter. But they all live far away.

I guess I'll share a Thanksgiving story
About 15 years ago, during my divorce, my dad and his wife [ my step mom] invited me and my 6 year old daughter to Thanksgiving.
My little sister, couple of their friends and a couple of other relatives were there.
Step mom KNEW that my daughter and I were vegetarians and would not eat turkey or ANY meat dishes.
So when we arrived there were About 8 to 9 dishes prepared and only 2 were made without meat.
To make a long story short, the discussion of course turned to the 2 of us being vegetarian and why nor try something with meat or even broth.
Every one being indifferent, especially my step-mom and little sister didn't think that they should save the ONLY vegetarian dish or some of the second one for us. So, we barely had a dinner because all of them indulged in the only vegetarian food there was. My dad was a wuss around his wife and did NOTHING to prevent it..
We left early and I took my daughter to an Indian restaurant.
We lived happily ever after 😉

Stressful year round but good tip, “it works for me.”
I usually bring food items to my son’s friends birthday parties or not eat and just drink water. Cakes, candies, sodas, juices, are not healthy anyway, the S.A.D. diet I see these families consume. My mom’s parties( Trumper past and current with the rest of the aunts and uncles-so I’m not wanting to see them.) The moral boundary must be drawn so if I choose to see them it’s not comfortable anymore so best if I don’t. My stepmom makes some items because she’s a food service employee, so she ok, but it feels like walking on eggshells over her/my dad’s house 🏠 So the holidays and my birthdays just feel like weekday now to me. I have nostalgic moments watching vintage shows and movies with my son 👦 so homebodies for the win

My survival strategies are to just stay home and make our own meal with just my husband and kids. My mom is supportive but often tells me she doesn’t get it, I have no idea what my dad thinks, we just started talking again late this summer after a 12 year no contact on my part for reasons I don’t wanna go into on here, but his opinion won’t hold water I’ll say that much. 😂 In laws are pretty supportive too, but t be fair it was my husbands idea initially to go vegan and I went along with it because I love animals and it wasn’t hard to swap out one ingredient for another here and there
