slump of concrete is a measurement of how workable a concrete mix is. It's determined by measuring the distance between the top of the concrete and the top of the slump cone after the cone is removed. The slump is measured in millimeters and recorded to the nearest 1/4 inch.
Here are the steps for performing a concrete slump test:
Moisten the inside of a 12-inch slump cone
Place the cone on a smooth, level surface
Fill the cone one-third full with concrete
Tamp the concrete to help it settle and release air
Fill the cone to the top, removing any excess concrete from the top and base
Slowly and steadily lift the cone vertically until it's clear of the concrete
Place the cone upside down on the surface next to the concrete
Place a straight edge across the base of the slump mold
Measure the distance from the bottom of the straight edge to the highest point of the slumped concrete
The ideal slump is about 4 inches. A slump value of 0–25 mm indicates very low workability, 25–50 mm indicates low workability, 50–100 mm indicates medium workability, and 100–175 mm indicates high workability. A concrete batch with a high slump may be weak when fully cured.
The slump test can be used to ensure uniformity between batches of similar concrete, and to check for variations in the materials being fed into the mixer. A high or low slump can be an immediate warning that allows the mixer operator to adjust the situation
