.40 S&W is a shortened 10mm that’s all it really is so the .40 is 1mm larger in diameter it also has about the same speed and greater muzzle energy than a 9mm round. A Speer gold dot 165 grain .40 S&W moves at 1150 fps and delivers 484 ft lb of energy while a Speer gold dot 124 grain 9mm also moves at 1150 fps and delivers 364 foot pounds of energy so looking at it objectively the .40 S&W moves about as fast as a 9mm depending on the load, has considerably higher muzzle energy, and is 1mm thicker in diameter all these things make .40 S&W a round that is more likely to stop a fight than 9mm

.45 is a wicked round 11.43mm in diameter and with hollow point rounds I’ve seen multiple get a full inch of expansion. Paired with the fact we live in modern times and can buy .45 +p that can give the round some serious horsepower many will get 500-600 ft lb of energy really 10mm and .357 sig are among the only semi automatic handgun calibers that come to mind which could equal or outclass it in terms of power but that is if I ignore the existence of .45 super of course which is pretty much just a very high pressure .45 acp normal operating pressure of .45 acp is 21,000 psi where .45 super is doing 28,000 psi wicked stuff

well... a .308 rifle cartridge is identical to 7.62x51 but a bit spicier.... 5.56 is slightly spicier than .223 but .223 wylde chambers chamber both without issue. 9mm is abot 35% of an inch... .38 is about 38%... .40 isn't that much bigger. then you have pistol rounds like .45acp, .50gi, .50ae, .500mag etc... not so much about bullet grain and girth but what's pushing it.

The difference is that extra 5 grain will leave a 2 foot hole in you
