The United States is departing from nearly a century of declining tariffs that once made its rates among the world’s lowest.

In a new report, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) unpacks the different components of new US tariffs and their potential impact on developing economies – particularly those that are structurally weak, vulnerable and small.

Despite contributing just 0.3% to the US trade deficit, vulnerable economies – least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island states – could face some of the highest new US tariffs, including country-specific measures currently on hold for a 90-day period until July 2025.
