What is rebound nasal congestion? I'm Dr. Manan Shah, I'm an ENT and allergist. A lot of times when people are looking up using Afrin, they hear about something called rebound congestion. So Afrin is a nasal decongestion that people spray in their nose to shrink down these inferior turbinates and it helps you breathe better, essentially makes these get smaller so air can pass easier through your nose and into your windpipe.

The problem with Afrin is, like any drug or like many drugs, if you keep using it, your body actually needs more and more each time to feel better. And so, when people use Afrin for more than three or four days, their body actually starts to cause these turbinates to get even more swollen than they might have been in the beginning.

And then what happens is you need more and more Afrin each time to get them to shrink down, and eventually you have these people that are walking around with an Afrin bottle in their pocket and spraying it all the time. If that's you or someone you know, you need to go see an ENT because you might need to have a procedure done or you might need to get weaned off the Afrin.
