In this video I talk about the huge fall in Russian Bond Sales in 2024, despite the fact that Interest Rates and Yields are close to an all time high. This failure to raise funding is seriously bad news for Russia and the Russian Economy at a time when it is facing increasing sanctions and rising expenditure for the war in Ukraine.

Last month the russian's failed to pay interest on some of their bonds. What is the value of a high interest rate if you are not going to pay that interest?

Take money and property from foreign businesses and not give it back? When has Russia ever done that? ~sarcasm

Hard to fight a war when you run out of money.

Not just as Joe said, most western banks are only allowed to process transactions for Russian sovereign debt for the purposes of divestment (and only recently at that), so now that western banks will only allow transactions where "non aligned" (the seedier offshoots of BRICS) can purchase Russian bonds (new or used, HA!) their price is dropping.

For Ruble denominated bonds however the effective (real) rate is about 7%, after inflation. And US treasuries are 1.3% based on the same metric. Is the 5.7% up tick worth the risk of not getting your money back? Probably not.

Does anyone know how long their gold reserves will last them?

@JoeBlogs Russia has ordered the central bank to keep the exchange rate at 1 dollar for every 95 rubles. Fixing the price is going to hurt the Russian economy a lot. They wanted to get rid of the Dollar after all.

What effect will the increase in the Russian defence budget have long term? Draining the country's finances, but how will that manifest itself?

Be interesting to see when the war ends and Russia dumps its gold reserves on the market what happens to the price of gold. I’m thinking it tanks dramatically.

“Russia in not able to sell enough bonds
To be able to fund…”
And I’d add:
“Russia has ended in a pond
Of which it’s not really fond
And if by magic if could get away it would search a wand”

Trust has always been a crucial factor for success of any enterprise. As trust in Russia and its political environment evaporates quickly, trust goes to space like the turrets of Russian tanks hit by Ukrainian anti-tank weapons. When trust crashes back on the land, there are nothing left. Russians, for their own good, must find a way to remove Putin’s kleptocracy from power.

This was last September, or in Russia "the good times" compared to current times, November 2024.
Russia has been a major power for centuries. Who'd a'thought a single 3 three day special military operation could end all that?
Not Putin.
