I like the old trick of freezing a cup of water solid, and then placing a coin on top of the ice, before you leave town. If the power goes out for long enough the coin will sink into the melting ice. Even if the power comes back on and refreezes everything, you will know to throw out the food if the coin is not on top. Shalom

We had a fridge out in an old woodshed, at our summer cabin. Someone had broken into in the winter, stole the fuses from the fuse box (pretty common back then ). When I opened this old fridge, it looked strange inside, and I couldn't put my finger on it at first, then I noticed the walls were moving a bit. Seems the people who broke into it, left some watermelon in it, the whole thing top to bottom, walls, shelves, everything was covered in maggots. Took a few hours to clean it out, but water is truly an amazing element. It can take the nastiest messes and turn them sparkling clean. In our home in sweden, we had floor sinks in the kitchen and bathroom. I luved having those, because i could just wash down the walls when ever I wanted. Just had to make sure to turn off the electricity to those rooms first. If we ever get to where we build our own home, Floor sinks will be a requirement for some rooms! :)

1) Unplug the freezer and remove all presumably now-bad foods; 2) allow to defrost just enough to remove the shelves; 3) put said-shelves into the yard for the dogs to lick clean; 4) dump an entire 50# bag of baking soda over all the shelves outside after the dogs pre-cleaned them; 6) squirt the entire interior of the now-empty freezer with white vinegar and leave it with the door open overnight; 7) the next morning, pour most of a gallon of vinegar over the baking soda caked freezer shelves and stand back, then use a kitchen brush to scrub everything off before hosing all the shelves clean; 8) wipe the inside of the vinegar-misted freezer with a wet paste of baking soda on a rag, then rinse-rinse-rinse until clean and very dry; 9) plug the freezer back in, replace all the shelves, and then freeze as many plastic jugs filled with water as will fit. Hey, it's hunting season again at last!!! Just replace all the bad meat that leaked and had to be fed to the dogs with fresh 2017 venison into the newly sanitized freezer, YAY!!!!
