Elephants are terrified of bees - and that's a good thing for farmers! Ongoing work in keeping elephants out of farmers' fields is finding that we humans have an unlikely ally in the humble honeybee, and using fences of beehives is a great way to keep crops safe!

I remember hearing that “Elephants aren’t actually afraid of mice; they’re afraid of sounds they can’t see the source of.” which fits mice and bees like a glove with how much smaller they are than elephants.

More importantly they found that by planting plants that elephants eat around villages it stopped them from raiding the villlages looking for food as well. Starving them is only a temporary solution

This combined with habitat restoration would be lit.

Makes sense, I wouldn’t go near a fence made of living pain.

When I was a kid, my great grandmother taught me that we plant two gardens. One with a fence around it for us and one outside the fence for the wildlife to help them live since humans take up so much of their habitat. The grandkids learned about gardening in the "wild" garden and the teens and adults worked in the human garden. There was never a problem. We must find ways to cohabitate in a fair way with wildlife. Bee fences are a win but the elephants will overcome their fear of bees as they become more desperate to find food.
I love your channel❤

I just wish there was a way we could actually help them get the vegetation they need. They just trying to eat and I can’t say I blame them. We taking that away from them.

This is where the national and local governments need to step up to provide wildlife management by defragmenting the food trail for the native wildlife. Including the local communities and farmers in this management is key. It won't work without community buy-in.

Habitat fragmentation is a nice way of saying shrinking and disappearing habitats

But can we make sure that farms are not allocated in existing elephant territories? Yes we’re keeping elephants away from places, but are there alternate places for the elephants to go

It's because the bees will go up their trunks. Elephants are so smart and compassionate that if one of them gets spooked by bees all the others will gather around and comfort it.

I feel like they aren’t pests. We are. We destroy habitats to directly benefit ourselves. Furthermore, if the food is in their habitat, we would come in and take it in a more complete and organized manner. So….. imo we’ve got a lot of audacity projecting this adjective so freely.

Just casually glossed over their habitats being destroyed.

This is great and all, but will this affect elephants being able to get the nutrition they need to live?

Are they raiding human settlements because it's easier? Or because they don't have other options for food and water?

Do they plant out crops in the wilderness for the herds? Here we have federal land that has rye grasses planted for deer herds so I was curious if they did any similar thing with native vegetation the elephants forage? It could also reduce the crop invasions

It's sad that elephants are doing it due to lack of environment, but I'm also glad they're using bees instead of something harsher,,,

Oh, lets take their living space and destroy their water and food sources, then call them pests...

I would be deterred by a bee fence.
