Playing guitar and creating my own music for 26 years, you are absolutely correct with your logic. 100% on point! You have to get the outside influence out of you when your writing from within. I can confidently say that what I write is what I want to write, and I love/hate it (depends on the day or mood) and love listening to it knowing in the only one who can listen to it in my voice memos
