R.I.P. Matthew Bell. UPS Flight 6 had a fire start in the cargo hold of the aircraft. The fire had been caused by lithium ion batteries heating up and exploding, and although there was protective liner around the container and cabin, a fire still broke out. The pilots started heading back towards the airport until smoke filled the cockpit and they had to use autopilot and ATC instructions to return to the airport. A few minutes later, the fire had eaten through the flight controls and Captain Douglas Lampeโs oxygen supply. The captain had headed back to the the galley area to grab an extra oxygen bottle but was unsuccessful and passed out. This left First Officer Matthew Bell all by himself in the cockpit. Matthew tried his best to maneuver the aircraft towards the runway using autopilot, though he overshot it. While Matthew missed the runway, in a heroic action, he diverted the plane away from a heavily populated area and saved many lives on the ground. Fly High Matthew.๐๐
