We had visitors from the Irish Republic when I worked at a former department store.
They asked ‘Are there tiles here?’ and were told we didn’t sell them. Then they enunciated a little more and we directed them to where they could find ‘towels’.
Then they spoke each syllable separately, ‘Are there an-y tile-ettes here?’
The penny dropped. ‘Toilets’ they wanted the rest rooms.
