It's so much cues to look for, I guess... Just focus on the defender u want ur teammates to attack...
What works for me is staring at the defender in the area I wanna play.. the teammate understand unconsciously that I want him to attack that defender.. usually he runs to the space behind him..
While my eyes are still on the defender all the time;
- if the teammate appears in my peripheral vision, I play the ball behind the defender (or against his momentum if he's moving at the moment of spoting my teammate in my peripheral) through the passing lane (the passing lane width determines the force I should give to the pass or whether it should be long or on the ground)..
- if he doesn't appear, I change direction... then I repeat this second time, the third etc..
