I never actually saw those parallels between the destruction of Pompeii and The Time War and I never realised how vivid The Doctor remembers the war and how big of a part they played in it at least in Pompeii he actually saved people but during The Time War he definitely wanted to save everyone but like he said he couldn’t this is what the show does really well it doesn’t show us about The Time War and just shows us how much it affects The Doctor then when we finally see it in The Day of The Doctor we can see why it affected them so much because they remembered being the one who burned them all they probably burned some of his best friends during the war and people he was incredibly close to and even those he wasn’t but still wanted to save them because he knows they are just as important as anyone and then the pain, regret, sorrow and depression in his eyes in Pompeii just shows how much he doesn’t want to live through it again like anyone i think it’s great touch of him just staring at the console for a few seconds before pulling the lever because he was definitely really wanting to save everyone but knew he couldn’t and that hurt him so much and the speed of how fast he pulled the lever just proves how fast he wanted to get out of there I think The Doctor did something similar in Cold Blood when Rory was being erased and Amy was begging him to help him and he stared at the console exactly the same way for a few seconds then quickly pulled the lever both times they didn’t look up from the console and both times they hesitated because they are both situations when The Doctor knew they couldn’t help but desperately desperately wanted to and that is one of the reasons that make The Doctor such a compelling character they are traveller that helps people any chance they can and when they can’t it deeply deeply hurts them because all they want to do is help people
