I give out mine down here in Africa. Especially when I find someone with extremely worn out strings

That's like reaching into your dirty laundry basket for a new shirt.

Ive done this ever since I started playing. Never re-used a string once. Yet I keep saving them (and, luckely, loosing them = no clutter)

As a bassist, this is completely legit. I learned this from a bass tech. If you break a string, it's always handy to just put an old one back on before going into a brand new set.
Handy trick!

I do the exact same thing after I wipe my butt. I haven’t bought toilet paper in 15 years!

You can boil the wound strings and they will sound new again. A trick i learned as a kid when i had no money.

I keep all my old strings as well. Sometimes you run out, and you might break a string in-between packets, then you have a spare for now until you get strings. I only do it if I've cleaned them after everytime I play, which I always do.

I like the advice, because used items can always be used for emergencies, testing, and experimenting. The people that ridicule the saving of used items are not thinking in the same mind set and under normal circumstances, it's these same people that go begging to borrow or take other people's shit when they need it for some reason. I see this attitude all the time and then when something goes wrong, that's when they find their thinking wasn't adequate enough.

I bring my stand up bass strings into Cuba. I change them once a year.. they are like new for them.. some of our local music stores are so cool they give me all these random new packs of guitar strings to bring in and give to musicians...

It honestly looks more like you just have a bag of old strings you never use because you always put fresh ones on

During financially challenged times, to rejuvinate used strings I would boil them in water for 5 minutes. It gets rid of gunk build up and works incredibly well.
