I used to work at The City Barge in Chiswick, W4, back in the early 80s as day cook, night barmaid, (I'm ancient.) It's right on the Thames towpath and our "cellar"was in the attic. It used to be called The Lord Mayor's (or something,) and was dated to something like 1480. When I worked there, before the clamshells (Thames flood defense) went in, the lower "Old Bar" which opened straight onto the towpath, had a submarine-type door that had to be secured at full moon/high tides, we had a chart provided by London Borough Council of the dates. The windows were extremely thick individual small square panes, some were bull's-eyes, and I fondly remember during a very high tide watching ducks and geese paddling along halfway up the windows, their webbed feet clearly visible in the murky Thames. And yes, it was flooded several times over the years when a tree branch smashed a pane of glass.
Fun fact: the Old Bar was used as a set in the Beatle's film "Help!" where Ringo encountered the lion in the cellar. Obviously, we didn't have a cellar... 😉

Whenever I visit a new town or city, I always go in search of the oldest pub. Because I love pubs, I love history, and old pubs are just so much more interesting. I tried to find the oldest in London and it's impossible to find. Ye Olde Cheshire cheese was a claimant and it looks old and it is definitely the sort of pub I was looking for. But not sure if it's the oldest. The Grapes was another possible contender, though I won't lie, I mainly went because Sir Ian McKellan owns it and I was lucky enough to see him when I visited. But that pub is just gorgeous inside and again, even if it's not the oldest, it's the sort of thing I'm looking for in a pub. I don't know if I'll ever find out which is the oldest in London but I will keep looking and if anyone has any suggestions for old pubs in London let me know😊

My local growing up didn't have a sign saying how old it was, but the last major remodel was pre-war with only a lick of pain every couple of decades. The buildings themselves were about 18th century and it was technically built as an in. It was rebuilt from an old brewery/pub and the oldest parts remaining were 16th century - not been a pub for 10 years now though.
I don't think any of our pubs actually claim to be the oldest here - but one of the night clubs has a see through floor that you can see Roman ruins through, that some claim used to be a pub. That place changes names roughly once every time Adele releases an album though...

"Old" pubs need: Wood tables, wood chairs, wood bar, wood floor, and wood paneled walls. Wood ceiling is optional.
