I study Eastern asian art in uni and traditional lacquerware (japanese "urushi") is very dangerous because the lacquer is obtained from an extremely toxic plant
The craftsmen who work this field need to grow a physical resistance to this plant or it could give cancer or other serious issues. Not everyone can do this job , ence why lacquer objects are very expensive
+I dont know if Liziqi worked with this specific technique of lacquer, but that's probably one explanation for the allergic reaction
