عند تفسير قول الله تعالى {لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ}
[الحجر: 44]
قال علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه: تدرون كيف أبواب النار؟ هكذا –ووضع إحدى يديه على الأخرى- أي سبعة أبواب بعضها فوق بعض, وإن الله وضع الجنان على العرض, ووضع النيران بعضها فوق بعض.

قال الضحاك:
في الدركة الأولى وهي أعلاها وعليها ممرّ الخلق وهي جهنم أهل التوحيد أصحاب الكبائر أدخلوا النار يعذبون بقدر ذنوبهم ثم يخرجون,
وفي الثانية: النصارى, وفي الثالثة: اليهود, وفي الرابعة: الصابؤون,
وفي الخامسة: المجوس,
وفي السادسة: أهل الشرك, وفي السابعة: المنافقون.
فذلك قوله تعالى {إن المنافقين في الدرك الأسفل من النار}.
