I would just do Select > Select Similar > Coplanar. Invert selection if you want the sphere.

If the vertex are welded you can also do this: 1. Select the loop betwen the Sphere and the rectangle. 2. Create a seam. 3. Press L and select by seams. 4. Separate them with P 5. Select both models and delete all seams.

You could also just click al on whichever shape you want Select it unless the faces are merged which from what I could tell they are not

Nice,Can we do this by. Going to object mode selecting the plane then. Enter edit mode press A to select the whole plane. Then p enter to separate selection.

Or you know, you could just / after selecting the square, which will focus only on the square and make the sphere disappear allowing you to select the entire square in one go without touching the sphere
