Yemen’s civil war began in 2015 as a result of clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis, who are an Iranian backed rebel group that has controlled much of the north of the country since 1992.
Houthis eventually captured the capital, in 2015.
This led Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab countries to join the conflict. As a result, the civil war increasingly became a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Today, nearly 6 million people have been uprooted from their homes and more than 23.4 million are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. The risk of a large-scale famine, violence, collapsing services and protracted displacement are the biggest challenges in Yemen.
