I think there’s something bittersweet about the Paris-ification of Japan and the loss of western otaku culture from the 2000s. Now, weebs made a LOT of mistakes and were cringey and often overstepped, but they were also DEEP in the sauce and wanted to learn everything about Japan so they could visit and get a full experience. Those weebs still exist but as Japanese pop culture has penetrated the zeitgeist and become more mainstream (and for lack of a better term, ā€œnormieā€), the concept of a ā€œJapan tripā€ has been popularized for people who aren’t really interested in Japan or invested in the culture at all. I’ll take that meme of the white guy in the kimono any day over the overwhelming rudeness and apathy we see now. Those 2000s western otaku still exist but they are few and far between compared to people who see Japan superficially as an aesthetic

This would make me cry if someone took something from my grandfather’s stone. He was such a kind man, why be so cruel to a total stranger??

Yes they definitely should! I HATE tourists in japan (eventhough i am one myself) when they donā€˜t follow the rules. Are all the rules great and make sense? Maybe not for us but it is how it is and WE have to adapt to THEM and not the other way around.

Yes, absolutely. Rules are there for a reason. Especially social etiquette ones 😤

Its actually crazy that he’d do that. I’m sure he wouldn’t want someone messing with his loved one’s grave back at home. Yeah Japan has a lot of rules, but a lot of stuff is just common sense. Social Media and the need for attention for some reason really messed up peoples brains.

You go to Japan for its culture and beauty, not as a toilet or as a garbage bin. It's just a shame that a few wreck it for the rest.😢

And those that say they’ll do what they want are usually also the ones who complain about foreigners in the US, not speaking English and not doing things the way that they think they should be. But they don’t consider hypocrisy at all.

I don't think it's a good idea to drink a can from a random grave. Not only is it disrespectful, but you wouldn't pick up a full can or food from the ground without even knowing where it came from. It might be not suitable for drinking.
