The dome of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) can turn like a flower following the Sun. Recently, a test in the Chilean Atacama Desert showed the dome rotating for the first time. Engineers from Cimolai, the company building the ELT dome, moved it 10 meters in each direction at 1 cm per second. The final speed will be a walking pace of 5 km/h. The dome is huge, weighing about 2500 tons now and eventually reaching 6100 tons. In the test, hydraulic devices were used, but later it will rotate with motorized bogies. The dome will have insulated aluminum cladding and sliding doors to protect the telescope. Despite challenges, progress like the dome rotation and the arrival of mirror segments at Paranal is making the ELT closer to reality.
