You can still lead your dog even if they are ahead of you. I do this with my bloodhound, its 12 minutes of back and forth until she gets it that were not tracking, just going for walks. If you tried to walk her without letting her get in front at all, you literally wont get anywhere. Some breeds are meant to walk ahead of the handler, but this technique absolutely works even for breeds that want to be out front.
